Questions You Should Ask About Cremation Services in Arizona

🕊️ You don’t know what you don’t know.
That’s not a flaw—it’s just the nature of planning something unfamiliar, like cremation services. When grief is fresh, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s where we come in.

At Ascend Cremations, our job isn’t just handling logistics—it’s helping families navigate unfamiliar territory with compassion, honesty, and clarity. This guide walks you through the questions you might not think to ask, but definitely should.

❓ Why does weight matter in cremation pricing?

When planning cremation services, one of the most important details to share is the weight of your loved one. The weight of the body affects cremation time, staffing requirements, and equipment. For example, cremation chambers have size limitations, and individuals who are heavier may require additional time or the use of a larger cremation chamber.

Here are a few reasons why weight may impact cremation costs:

  • Additional Staff for Transfer: For individuals over 200 lbs, we send an additional team member to ensure a safe and respectful transfer.

  • Longer Cremation Times: Heavier bodies often require more time in the cremation chamber.

  • Larger Cremation Chambers: Standard cremation machines have limits on the body size they can accommodate. For larger individuals, a specialized cremation chamber may be needed.

  • Maximum Weight at Ascend: Our equipment will accommodate individuals up to 450 lbs.

For detailed information on pricing factors, we encourage you to read the Cremation Association of North America’s (CANA) guidelines, which covers the impact of body weight on cremation services.

🚐 What should I know about transportation?

This is a big one. Most people don’t realize they have options—or even a short grace period—before their loved one needs to be moved.

If the death occurs at home, there’s no rush to move the body. You can take some quiet time before calling us. Once authorized, our care team will call to coordinate a time, typically arriving within 30 to 60 minutes, depending on distance and traffic.  Here is a link to help understand Arizona home funeral laws.

Our base pricing includes transport within 25 miles. Beyond that, we charge per mile—but we’re always upfront about it, and happy to quote you in advance.

📄 What about death certificates?

We file for the first certified copy of the death certificate for you. You can order additional copies through us or directly from the county. We’ll walk you through exactly how many you may need and how to use them.

For Maricopa County residents, you can order additional death certificates here, and for Pinal County residents, you can use this link.

📅 How long does the cremation process take?

TThisAnAnother great question to ask about cremation services is: how long the process takes.

We often say 7–14 days, but here’s the inside scoop:
If everything goes smoothly with the doctor and the state, it could be as fast as 3–5 days. Delays typically come from medical examiners, pending paperwork, or family decisions.

We offer 5 days of refrigeration at no charge, and we’re flexible beyond that—as long as the process is moving forward, we do not charge extra for storage.

🤝 What should I do in the first few days after a death?

One of the kindest things a friend can do is act as your point person—taking calls, notifying others, managing the chaos. That gives you space to reach out personally to those who matter most, or simply catch your breath.

We can help you think through who that might be and how to delegate well.  Here is a link to a full article about what to do after a loved one passes along.

🪦 Should I plan a funeral service too?

Cremation is what we do with the body. A Funeral is how we say goodbye.

Ascend Cremations is a licensed funeral establishment in Arizona. We can absolutely help you arrange a traditional funeral service—but most families choose direct cremation, then plan a personal service later.

It’s cost-effective and gives you total freedom:
Plan something traditional, unique, or completely personal—on your own timeline and terms.  Here’s a link to a great article about planning affordable funeral services.

💸 How much can I save by doing it yourself?

Perhaps this is the most significant material question of all the questions to ask about cremation services

Here’s a quick breakdown:

Service Planning TypeTypical Cost Range
Funeral Home Staff + Venue$2,000 – $5,000+
Officiant, Programs, Extras$500 – $2,000
DIY Service After CremationOften Free – $500

By using direct cremation and planning a meaningful goodbye yourself, you can save thousands of dollars—without compromising on love or legacy.
